Workshop: READing and Transkribing handwritten documents – 24 January 2019

We are delighted to announce our first skills training workshop this year:

The Recognition and Enrichment of Archival Documents (READ) project aims to make archival material more accessible by training computers to read handwritten historical manuscripts. Join Dr Louise Seaward (UCL), coordinator of Transcribe Bentham, part of the READ project, to learn about the initiative and to work with Transkribus.

12:30 Lunch (provided)*

13:15 Presentation on READ project

13:45 Transkribus workshop

15:45 Coffee break

16:00 Discussion

Free, but booking essential. Please register via Eventbrite.

All participants must bring a laptop and download the Transkribus software in advance (instructions will be sent after booking). When booking a place at this workshop, you consent for your contact details to be shared with Louise so that she can add you to a shared collection that we will be using in the workshop.

Places are limited, and in the first instance are only available to University of Manchester staff and students (please sign up using your university email address). We will open up bookings to others nearer the time, subject to availability.

This workshop is organised by the Lives of Letters group and funded by a Collaboration Grant from the John Rylands Research Institute.

* The event will be catered vegetarian. Please email naomi[dot]billingsley[at]manchester[dot]ac[dot]uk with any other dietary requirements.
